{"id":1459,"date":"2014-07-24T09:45:45","date_gmt":"2014-07-24T09:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/?p=1459"},"modified":"2019-08-28T10:29:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T10:29:59","slug":"increasing-temperatures-causing-problems-australias-koalas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/increasing-temperatures-causing-problems-australias-koalas\/","title":{"rendered":"Increasing Temperatures Causing Problems for Australia\u2019s Koalas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia had the 15th hottest summer since records began in 1910, and 2013 was the hottest year on record. \u00a0The southern city of Adelaide, experienced 13 days of higher than 40 degrees C temperatures. \u00a0This might be great news for sun worshipers but it is not good for the native koala.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1263\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1263 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/dehydrated-koala.jpg\" alt=\"Dehydrated Koala\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dehydrated Koala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Picture: Mike Burton Source: News Limited<\/p>\n<p>The extreme heat caused several koalas to be admitted into animal hospitals across the east of the country. \u00a0In just one week at the beginning on January, 23 koalas were admitted into the Adelaide Wildlife and Koala Hospital. \u00a0The marsupials were suffering with heat stress and dehydration. \u00a0Some were so dehydrated that they were put on drips. \u00a0Unfortunately, not all survived; two had to be put down due to renal failure. \u00a0Luckily, most survived and once rehydrated we returned to the wild.<\/p>\n<p>Koalas live in eucalypt woodlands and forests and are make their homes across a vast swath of Australia from south-eastern South Australia to Queensland. \u00a0They do not normally drink water because they usually get sufficient water by licking dew from leaves. \u00a0It is rare that a koala will leave its perch safe up in the trees. \u00a0Spotting a koala at ground level is a sign of a heat stressed animal.<\/p>\n<p>One koala was so thirsty that it followed a couple along suburban roads near Adelaide, drinking three bottles of water along the way. \u00a0As featured on adelaidenow.com.au, Mr and Mrs Sun were walking near the Black Hill Conservation Park entrance when Mr Sun spotted the koala in a tree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1263\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1263 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/koala.jpg\" alt=\"Koala\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe kept looking at me and looked like she wanted something, so I poured some water in my palm, and the koala drank it at once,\u201d said Mrs Sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe followed me for an hour and ended up drinking three bottles altogether \u2013 definitely the friendliest koala I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australian residents were urged to leave containers of water out for koalas and other wildlife to drink during hot weather. \u00a0In an article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koalaland.com.au\/single-post\/2014\/01\/21\/Our-Koalas-Are-Suffering-In-Heat-Crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">koalaland.com<\/a>, Koala carer Susannah Keogh from Lismore\u2019s Friends of the Koala Care Centre, said the lack of rain and drying winds had thinned eucalypt canopies, meaning more koalas were on the hunt for water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally most of a koala\u2019s water intake comes from the leaves it eats,\u201d Ms Keogh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey get quickly dehydrated, which can lead to illness and even death.
