{"id":2623,"date":"2014-02-06T13:28:47","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T13:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/?p=2623"},"modified":"2022-11-21T14:23:41","modified_gmt":"2022-11-21T14:23:41","slug":"second-journal-paper-published-collaboration-university-brighton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/second-journal-paper-published-collaboration-university-brighton\/","title":{"rendered":"Second journal paper published from collaboration with the University of Brighton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following a blog posted on 24.05.2012 about collaboration between Aquaread and the University of Brighton, we can now report that a second paper has been published in the Earth Surface Processes and Landforms by Dr Gary Bilotta and PhD student Magdalena Grove (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brighton.ac.uk\/about-us\/contact-us\/index.aspx\">https:\/\/www.brighton.ac.uk\/about-us\/contact-us\/index.aspx<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-831\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 12.57.14\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-05-at-12.57.141.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1086\" height=\"754\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The paper follows up on a previous publication about developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/aquaread-funding-aids-research-developing-environment-specific-water-quality-guidelines\/\">environment-specific water quality guidelines for suspended particulate matter<\/a>,\u00a0which is available here\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0043135412000875\">https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0043135412000875<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new publication investigates the laboratory techniques used in estimating fluvial particulate organic carbon and is called: \u201cOn the use of loss-on-ignition techniques to quantify fluvial particulate organic carbon\u201d. \u00a0The results of this study showed that the conventional technique (mass loss on ignition) is not as accurate method for determination of fluvial particulate organic carbon as an oxidative-combustion and CO2 detection method for a number of reasons. This has implications for turbidity monitoring, because we need to understand the parameters that turbidity acts as a surrogate for, and we need to be able to accurately rate turbidity against these.
