{"id":6501,"date":"2018-08-09T12:00:47","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/?p=6501"},"modified":"2023-01-16T11:27:08","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T11:27:08","slug":"uks-rivers-and-lakes-fail-to-meet-ecological-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/uks-rivers-and-lakes-fail-to-meet-ecological-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority Of UK\u2019s Rivers And Lakes Fail To Meet Minimum Ecological Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/state-of-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the European Environment Agency (EEA), only 40% of Europe\u2019s lakes, rivers and transitional and coastal waters are in good ecological status. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/state-of-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of Our Waters report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was developed from studies of around 130,000 waterways, found that not only was had a majority of water bodies failed to meet requirements but that England was one of the poorest performers overall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were a number of reasons for this decline in quality, with increases in population density and greater intensity used in agricultural practices listed as contributing factors to the overall decline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it came to looking for a higher standard of water quality, you don\u2019t have to look too far. Scotland ranked alongside much of Scandinavia in terms of water quality, with around 55% of the countries waterways meeting the required levels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6502 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-09-at-12.53.22-300x264.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"516\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though comparing water quality across countries can be difficult due to varying reporting methodologies, it is still apparent that the low standards of water quality require immediate action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do we do about it?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reference to the report, Karmenu Vella, the EU environment commissioner said that \u201cmore needs to be done before all lakes, river, coastal waters and groundwater bodies are in good status.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also added some advice to England in particular in helping to improve their water quality: \u201cIt would be advisable for England to continue with legislation similar to the water framework directive after Brexit.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/pubs\/pdf\/factsheets\/water-framework-directive.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water framework directive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was originally conceived as a method of encouraging EU countries to achieve a good ecological status in their waterways before 2015. Clearly many have failed to manage this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With biodiversity loss, water quality management and ecosystem damage at stake, more needs to be done to ensure these requirements are being met. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water quality monitoring<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/water-quality-monitoring\/\">water quality monitoring<\/a>, we are firm believers that knowledge is power.
