It\u2019s clear that water, which makes up 71% of the earth\u2019s surface and 60% of the human body, needs to be protected, and not polluted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Let\u2019s look at the significance of clean water in more depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impacts of water pollution<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Water pollution occurs when chemicals or harmful microorganisms enter streams, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/pollution-in-uk-rivers\/\">rivers<\/a><\/strong>, wetlands, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/7-ways-to-stop-sea-pollution\/\">oceans<\/a><\/strong>, or other bodies of water. It can cause water toxicity, making it harmful for humans and animals to consume and use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Groundwater pollution<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">What\u2019s worse, water pollution can be insidious \u2013 we might not realise we\u2019re doing it until it\u2019s too late. This is because a significant portion of our earth\u2019s water is groundwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Groundwater is essentially stored in underground aquifers, refreshed by rain water that seeps below the surface. It\u2019s one of our largest stores of clean water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Its invisibility renders it vulnerable to pollution from animal agriculture run-off, septic system waste, and landfill waste. Once that happens, it&#8217;s nigh on impossible to rid aquifers of pollutants, and they can become unusable for decades to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Groundwater pollution, in turn, spreads contamination into streams, lakes, and oceans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Surface water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Surface water makes up all those glistening blue parts on the globe \u2013\u00a0our seas, rivers, and lakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The English water provider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anglianwater.co.uk\/help-and-advice\/drinking-water-advice\/where-your-water-comes-from\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>AnglianWater sources 50% of its water from rivers and reservoirs<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Before it\u2019s drinkable, it undergoes a complex process of treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But getting water up to drinkable standards is becoming harder and more energy-intensive, as fertilisers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/impacts-of-pesticides-on-water-quality\/\"><strong>pesticides<\/strong><\/a>, and nitrates seep into our precious sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Not to mention, surface water <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-57804260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pollution has a dramatic impact on animal ecosystems<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, killing fish and invertebrates \u2013 many of which live in waters we then attempt to fish from.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Ocean water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Toxic-Plastic-Waste-Water.jpeg\" alt=\"Plastic Waste Floating in the Sea\" width=\"1000\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Toxic-Plastic-Waste-Water.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Toxic-Plastic-Waste-Water-300x126.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Toxic-Plastic-Waste-Water-768x323.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Did you know that when we eat fish, we are often consuming microplastics?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Littering, winds, and waste management errors all lead to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/marine-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>accumulation of debris in the ocean<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. This often ends up getting broken down into smaller pieces called microplastics, which fish then consume and absorb into their tissue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Humans, in turn, eat the fish that consume the plastic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Apart from the very serious problem of plastic pollution in our oceans, we also see alarming rates of chemical contamination and nutrient pollution. Concentrations of chemicals like nitrogen and phosphorus lead to the growth of toxic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/parameters\/blue-green-algae\">algal blooms<\/a><\/strong>, which impact local fishing and tourism industries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why clean water is so important<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">When we look at the effects of water pollution, it becomes clearer why it\u2019s so important to protect our water sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Clean water is vital to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Animal ecosystems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Fishing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Tourism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/how-water-quality-affects-human-health\/\">Human health<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Unfortunately, pollution can cause a downward spiral. Once animal ecosystems are damaged, what once was a harmonious series of symbioses can collapse into ruin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The more fish are harmed, the more we attempt to fish, the more harmful pollutants are released into the water, the more fish are harmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To match the significance of clean water, we need significant efforts to reverse our impact and halt further damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Britain\u2019s water quality<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">You might be wondering, then, what\u2019s the current status of Britain\u2019s waters?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To assess that, we need to know the measure used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Previously, we used what\u2019s known as the General Quality Assessment (GQA), which looks at the presence of a limited number of chemicals and the bugs found in bodies of water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Under this assessment, more than 70% of rivers across England and Wales were seen to be \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018fair\u2019. That\u2019s great, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Unfortunately, the GQA was missing a lot of important factors. Since then, the European Water Framework Directive has led the introduction of a new system, which aims for \u2018Good Ecological Status\u2019 (GES).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This looks at a larger variety of pollutants and biological factors, giving us a more accurate view of Britain\u2019s water environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Despite that previous figure of 70%, it\u2019s now clear that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/our-work\/policy-insight\/water-and-wetlands\/what-the-rspb-does-for-water-and-wetlands\/the-condition-of-our-rivers-and-wetlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>only 27%<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> of England and Wales\u2019 waters are meeting Good Ecological Status.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">100% healthy waters by 2027<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">With all that in mind, it might seem hard to believe that England\u2019s goal is to reach 100% healthy waters by 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Environment Agency\u2019s chief, Emma Howard Boyd, has remarked that: \u201cWater quality has plateaued since 2016,\u201d and that, \u201cIt isn\u2019t good enough\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To Boyd, a lack of investment and political will are largely to blame.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting our waters<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The changes that need to happen are individual, organisational, and governmental.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">On an individual level, we can each contribute to a healthier water future by recycling, producing less waste, and opting for green businesses and banks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Organisations must meticulously assess their practices and impacts, working sustainability into their working processes from the ground up. A sector requiring significant effort is the farming industry \u2013 with fertiliser and other agricultural run-off being a leading cause of water pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">However, without government investment, it\u2019s very difficult to ask individual farms to change their practices. It\u2019s the responsibility of governments, therefore, to <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/nov\/30\/environment-to-benefit-from-biggest-farming-shake-up-in-50-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">encourage and subsidise cleaner and greener methods of farming<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Aquaread-Water-Monitoring.jpeg\" alt=\"Person in a Boat Holding Water Monitoring Equipment\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Aquaread-Water-Monitoring.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Aquaread-Water-Monitoring-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Aquaread-Water-Monitoring-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The issue of clean water shouldn\u2019t be left to luck. This isn\u2019t a \u201cwill we or won\u2019t we\u201d scenario when it comes to meeting our goal of healthy waters by 2027.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It requires significant effort in the form of more sustainable practices, pollution management and control via <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/products\/water-quality\">water monitoring<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, and public education. But that effort is by no means out of reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Take The Ocean Cleanup, for example.
