Establish which water source you need to test<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The water source that you need to test will determine the kind of test you should carry out. Here are some factors you may consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>pH levels<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This is one of the most common water quality measurements taken, establishing how acid or alkaline water is \u2014\u00a0and for good reason. The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/ph-orp-sensor\">pH of water<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> can impact the nutrient density, microbial activity, chemical behaviour, and the lives of aquatic organisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">PH is found by measuring the amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The higher the concentration of free hydrogen, the more acidic the water, while a higher level of hydroxyl ions indicates alkalinity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dissolved oxygen (DO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/dissolved-oxygen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>level of DO in water<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> correlates to the health of aquatic life therein \u2014 simply because, well, oxygen is crucial for all life forms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Low levels of DO can harm aquatic life, and the opposite is also true. If the water is too saturated with oxygen, nothing much will thrive there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Salinity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/salinity\">salinity of water<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> refers to the concentration of salt and is measured by testing the water\u2019s electrical conductivity. Saltwater is more conductive than water with low or no salt content.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ammonia\/ammonium<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/ammonium-ammonia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>Testing for ammonia in water<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> can provide another crucial indicator of water quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">High levels of ammonia can indicate contamination with pollutants such as fertiliser and industrial waste from the manufacturing of plastics, rubber, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Blue-green algae<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This photosynthetic bacteria can grow in both fresh and marine water where water is warm and rich in nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">If toxic algal blooms form, they can limit the growth of other plants below and lead to the water becoming hypoxic (starved of oxygen) and uninhabitable. <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/blue-green-algae\">Testing for blue-green algae<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, therefore, is an important indicator of the health of a body of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A range of other parameters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">These are just some of the factors you may want to test for when establishing water quality.
