Infected workforces, quarantines, and uncertainty have knocked back supply chains in almost every industry, and there\u2019s currently global turmoil with electronics components supply chains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">So why exactly, and what can be done about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is there a shortage of IC components?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A huge amount of modern manufacturers rely on just-in-time production. That is, ordering raw materials <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">just <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">before running out in order to minimise costs on warehousing &amp; storage. In an ideal, normal, world, this is a great way to cut costs, increase efficiency, and stop depreciation of raw materials through things like spoilage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But when long supply chains rely on just-in-time methods, the smallest knock to that chain can cause serious problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7273\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/supply-chain-cargo-ships.jpeg\" alt=\"Birds-eye view of container and cargo ships at a shipyard at sunrise\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/supply-chain-cargo-ships.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/supply-chain-cargo-ships-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/supply-chain-cargo-ships-768x431.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Well, the pandemic has been much more than a small knock in the supply chain. But problems in sourcing raw materials and components (such as semiconductors) have been compounded with a dramatic increase in the demand for electronics. From August 2020-21, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-chip-shortage-drags-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">there was a 30% increase in demand for copper foil.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Growing awareness of the devastating effects of climate change is fuelling a swift uptake in new technologies such as electric cars &amp; renewables. In the meantime, technological innovations are resulting in a broad appeal for home and personal electronics like mobile phones, laptops, Alexa &amp; Nest devices, and even doorbells!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The smaller they get, the more appealing they become \u2013\u00a0that\u2019s exactly what Integrated Circuit (IC) chips &amp; PCBs enable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Before PCBs &amp; IC chips, electrical engineers would have to physically wire together all of the components \u2013 which is why older tech tended to be so bulky! In order to be produced effectively, all of these modern devices <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">need<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> PCBs and the components that make them work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">While there isn\u2019t a shortage of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">every single <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">IC component, there are disruptions in so many supply chains that it\u2019s made getting hold of any vital equipment very difficult. What\u2019s more, due to the growing demand, the components that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">are <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">available are quickly snatched up by larger electronics producers. However small, many of our water testing products rely on effective circuit boards to function \u2013\u00a0and our customers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">rely on our products<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to operate effectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">After all, being able to accurately monitor water level &amp; quality is vital for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/the-significance-of-clean-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">preserving waterways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> &amp; wildlife as well as providing advanced flood warnings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s just as vital, therefore, that our equipment stays available.
