Now, full-scale industrial factories pollute their surrounding environments and ultimately, the world \u2013\u00a0so much so that industrial waste is one of the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-are-the-biggest-sources-of-water-pollution\/\">biggest sources of water pollution<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industrial pollution?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To understand its impacts, we must first understand the sources of industrial pollution. The short answer is that it constitutes any pollution of which the source is industry of any form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As for the longer answer, well, let\u2019s look at some common industrial pollutant-causing activities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Burning coal and fossil fuels (oil, petroleum, natural gas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The release of chemical solvents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Radioactive material leakage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The release of untreated waste<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Industrial waste can be both hazardous and non-hazardous, with the latter including things like rubbish and debris. It goes without saying that \u2018non-hazardous\u2019 doesn\u2019t necessarily equal \u2018fine for the environment\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Waste classed as hazardous include things like ammonia, solvents, and petroleum, and are classified as such because they have one or more of the following characteristics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Ignitability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Corrosivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Reactivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Toxicity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of industrial waste<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/water-pollution-runoff-river.jpeg\" alt=\"Murky, polluted waters flowing out of drains into a river untreated\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/water-pollution-runoff-river.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/water-pollution-runoff-river-300x202.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">When metals, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/impacts-of-pesticides-on-water-quality\/\">chemicals<\/a><\/strong>, and sewage are released or leak into the environment, they cause significant air, soil, and water pollution \u2013 the latter being one of the most devastating results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Often, untreated wastewater is wrongly released back into bodies of water due to lack of infrastructure or regulation. When this happens, lakes, rivers, and coastal waters can become significantly polluted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Pollutants like total organic carbon (TOC) and compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorous can lead directly to eutrophication, which can often be the death of a body of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is eutrophication?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Eutrophication occurs when a body of water becomes enriched with nutrients and minerals. While that might sound like a good thing, it is precisely the opposite. In fact, eutrophication promotes the growth of an overabundance of toxic algae and plants, that in turn increase levels of carbon dioxide in water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">By nature of growing rapidly on the surface of the water, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/blue-green-algae-causes\/\">toxic algal blooms<\/a><\/strong> can decrease sunlight and lead to hypoxia (a lack of oxygen). Oxygen starved waters are, as you can imagine, not ideal for aquatic life. Fish die and biodiversity dramatically decreases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As the excess plant matter decomposes, carbon dioxide releases and eventually makes its way into the ocean. Without human intervention, eutrophication is a natural (but slow) process that occurs over centuries. The problem lies in industrial waste speeding this up, with consequences for drinking water, fisheries, and recreational water alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Water pollution is a cycle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Water pollution doesn\u2019t solely impact aquatic life. To put it simply, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/the-significance-of-clean-water\/\">water is so important because it sustains<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> all living things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We have come to rely heavily on water for industry and agriculture \u2013 but what about when the water we use is itself contaminated? The farmer uses the water for irrigation purposes, and the quality of our crops is affected. More fertilisers are used, and fertilisers pollute the water, and so on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The thing is that water is not a limitless, ever-renewing resource; in fact, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/the-future-of-water\/\">we\u2019re running out of it<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Water pollution perpetuates itself without intervention and innovation. So what can we do?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution to industrial pollution<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">There are a few things that need to change to minimise industrial pollution, namely:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Policy changes and effective enforcement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Controlled industrial growth and forward planning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Investment in new, sustainable technologies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Managed waste disposal and treatment where disposal is damaging<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Reduced usage of natural resources that involve damaging extraction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Without a holistic approach to industrial pollutant management, efforts are made redundant. In order to turn this around, changes need to be immediate and global.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The EU, for example, has put in place a \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/strategy\/zero-pollution-action-plan_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>Zero Pollution Action Plan<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u2019 that aims to reduce water pollution \u2013\u00a0and the UK should be sure to follow suit.
