{"id":7281,"date":"2022-11-04T11:14:48","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T11:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/?p=7281"},"modified":"2023-08-01T14:47:46","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T13:47:46","slug":"what-causes-droughts-and-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-causes-droughts-and-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"What Causes Droughts &#038; Why Do They Lead to Floods?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The newspapers in the summer of 2022 were jam-packed with stories of droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">From June to August 2022, for example, England experienced its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-09-england-drought-hit-summer-joint-hottest.html#:~:text=An%20aerial%20picture%20shows%20low,Kent%20on%20August%2023%2C%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">joint hottest summer on record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2014 and a drought to boot. The sustained heat and lack of rain\u00a0 led to the source of the Thames drying up and shifting downstream several miles, and a hosepipe ban was introduced in London for the first time in a decade. But it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/aug\/19\/why-areas-uk-drought-visual-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">wasn\u2019t just London that was impacted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2014 areas of Yorkshire, Wales, the South West, the South East, and more were affected too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Why have droughts become so commonplace, and why are they often followed by flash floods?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes drought?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">There are many reasons why a drought may occur, and the reasons can be meteorological, hydrological, and human.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Putting it simply, a drought occurs when an area experiences an unusually dry spell, often over a few months or longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We know that drought happens when there are periods of low or no rainfall and often warm or hot weather. But what leads to this combination?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural causes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Droughts have occurred <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/what-is-drought\/historical-drought#:~:text=The%20three%20longest%20drought%20episodes,early%2021st%2Dcentury%20drought).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">throughout human history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, often triggered by natural phenomena such as shifting weather patterns. These cyclical patterns change the amount of moisture and heat in the air, the earth, and the ocean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing temperatures<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/07\/170719084712.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Research shows that changing sea temperatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> can contribute significantly to land dryness and have caused persistent droughts in North America and the Mediterranean. Similarly, the higher the temperature on land, the more moisture is evaporated from the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water demand<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Often, drought occurs when demand for water exceeds supply. As the population booms and agriculture requires more and more water, the scales begin to tip. Precious resources like underground aquifers are plundered as a result and, in turn, those same resources are permanently damaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change and deforestation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7282 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/deforestation-amazon-rainforest.jpeg\" alt=\"A birds-eye view of a rainforest with a road in the middle. In wetter areas, the humidity means that the air absorbs more water, and more rainfall occurs. In drier areas, water evaporates faster, leading to less rainfall and parched earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Typically, trees and plants retain and release moisture into the atmosphere, leading to rainfall. They\u2019re also crucial for soil quality and its ability to soak up water. Without trees and plants, then, there\u2019s less rainfall and the earth is incapable of retaining moisture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Because the ground is where we get a good chunk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/the-significance-of-clean-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">our drinking water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, you can see how the water demand will start to exceed supply as a result. In fact, when the earth becomes baked and dry, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CyGmRaadsPE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">rainfall is absorbed at a much slower rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">So, when heavy rainfall occurs after a drought, the water has nowhere to escape to. Instead, it runs off slopes or pools where it is, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/types-and-causes-of-flooding\/\">causing flash floods<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Hannah Cloke, a hydrologist at the University of Reading, says in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/drought-causing-floods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">this article from Wired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, \u201cSoil starts to act like concrete or tarmac\u2026 When it\u2019s really dry and when it\u2019s really wet it\u2019s actually difficult to get water into the soil.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Areas that are particularly built up or agricultural are also more susceptible to these major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/how-flooding-affects-water-quality\/\">flooding<\/a> events because of a lack of trees and plants, as we talked about earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global warming as a key cause of droughts and floods<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">While there are natural reasons for both of these extreme events, they\u2019re happening more frequently and leaving lasting damage because of accelerated climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A vicious cycle begins: rising temperatures lead to drier land, which leads to an excess water demand, which leads to used up resources, which leads to drier land, which leads to poor rainfall absorption, which leads to land erosion and degradation, etc etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We don\u2019t mean to sound all doom and gloom, but it\u2019s important to be aware that extreme weather events will continue to be catastrophic and cyclical unless global warming is addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hands-holding-up-earth.jpeg\" alt=\"Multiple hands hold up a model of the earth as a symbol of environmentalism.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hands-holding-up-earth.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hands-holding-up-earth-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hands-holding-up-earth-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">There is no catch-all solution to rising droughts, floods, and climate change \u2014 to make a difference, a multi-pronged approach is necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climate change mitigation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u2014 turning from fossil fuels to renewables for a greener future<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Improved water infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2014 repairing and improving infrastructure in domestic and commercial settings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water recycling <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u2014 treating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/is-rainwater-clean\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">rainwater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and even wastewater to use in irrigation, industry, and for replenishing groundwater supply\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Halting deforestation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2014 retaining precious areas of wildlife to reduce flooding and the impacts of climate change\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Staying on top of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/how-to-test-water-quality-basics\/\"><b>water quality<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/products\/water-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">monitoring water quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> to protect aquifers and other water sources and to assess the impacts of flooding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Drought and flooding events can feel rather Biblical, but we don\u2019t necessarily need a miracle to solve them. We need real human action, yes, and a drive to protect the areas of land outside of our line of sight. The approach needs to be global and sustained \u2014 but it\u2019s not impossible!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In fact, in many parts of the world, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.castlewater.co.uk\/about\/case-studies\/drought-resilience-through-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">drought resilience and innovation plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> are being put in place to try to combat extreme weather.
