How Do You Measure It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">What is salinity? Put simply, it refers to the \u2018saltiness\u2019 of a given body of water. It is the concentration of dissolved mineral salts therein \u2014 and is often measured either directly by its concentration or through electrical conductivity, which it affects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But let\u2019s take a closer look at measuring water salinity and what it indicates regarding water quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to measure water salinity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Water salinity is typically calculated by measuring the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-is-electrical-conductivity-and-why-is-it-important\/\">electrical conductivity<\/a><\/strong> of water. Dissolved salts conduct electrical currents, so a higher conductivity measure indicates higher salinity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Aquaread\u2019s salinity measurement, for example, is calculated using a mix of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-is-electrical-conductivity-and-why-is-it-important\/\">electrical conductivity<\/a><\/strong>, temperature, and other measurements in a constant equation. The output is shown in Practical Salinity Units (PSU), which can be translated into Parts per Thousand (PPT) if you prefer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">When <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/salinity\">measuring the salinity of water, our sensor<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> can be used for both short and long-term recordings depending on your needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical water salinity ranges<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In general, freshwater exhibits a salinity level of less than 0.5ppt and seawater usually sits around 35ppt. Of course, not all bodies of water are at either end of this spectrum, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>Brackish waters<\/strong> (Mesohaline) are usually between 5ppt and 18ppt<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>Salt marshes and swamps<\/strong> (Polyhaline) are usually between 18ppt and 30ppt.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Salinity slowly increases as you move away from freshwater sources and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/marine-water-quality-importance\/\"><strong>towards the ocean<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes changes in salinity?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Fluctuations in salinity can be natural, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The weathering of rocks containing minerals, like salt, increases salinity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The input of rivers, rain, snow, and ice decrease the levels of salinity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">These two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth-science\/oceanography\/physical-ocean\/salinity#:~:text=Evaporation%20of%20ocean%20water%20and,snow%2C%20and%20melting%20of%20ice.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>natural processes<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> tend to counterbalance each other when undisturbed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But changes in the salinity of a body of water can be unnatural, too \u2014 this is known as \u2018secondary salinity\u2019. Agricultural and irrigation processes cause an increase in salinity because of the chemicals often used (such as chloride).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The over-irrigation of crops or inappropriate soil without drainage, for example, can cause salt to leak into groundwater. This, in turn, leads to irrigation salinity, whereby salts accumulate in soil and cause poor plant health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impacts of salinity on water quality<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">If a body of water exceeds its natural salinity levels because of pollution, the effects can be devastating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The aquatic animals that live in freshwater like rivers and ponds are simply not able to tolerate a higher salinity level \u2014 and often die as a result. Scientists have also made some interesting correlations, like the fact that road salts have been associated with the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.rpi.edu\/content\/2016\/11\/22\/road-salt-%E2%80%9Cmasculinizes%E2%80%9D-frogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">masculinisation of frogs in North America<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, leading to an imbalance in the males to females ratio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">High-salinity water is heavier than low-salinity water, so when brine runs into surface waters it can sink to the bottom and form a barrier. This stops the natural exchange of nutrients and oxygen between the upper layers of the water column and the base. As a result, the environment can become low in oxygen, and become a deadzone where aquatic organisms can\u2019t survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s important to remember that seemingly small changes like these \u2014 ones that affect, say, the fish population of a single pond \u2014 have ripple effects beyond their initial impact.
