Pesticides, unfortunately, most usually contain a range of toxic and harmful chemicals that cause both air and water pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are pesticides?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The foundation of what you need to know about pesticides lies in its name. To break it down:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pest <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">refers to any plant or creature that is deemed non-productive to the crop that a farm is ultimately trying to grow. These might include insects or rodents that would eat or harm the crop, or other plants that would compete with them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cide <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">derives from the French \u2018cide\u2019, which finds its origins in the Latin \u2018cida\u2019, meaning a killer or slayer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">So in short, pesticides are designed to kill any unwanted pests that could interrupt or damage the growth of a crop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But what do they contain that makes them so harmful?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Most pesticides fall under these categories: organochlorines, organophosphates, and carbamates. As you might guess from these names, prominent pesticide ingredients include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/understanding-water-salinity\/#:~:text=Agricultural%20and%20irrigation%20processes%20cause%20an%20increase%20in%20salinity\">Chlorine<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Phosphate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Carbamic acid<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pan-uk.org\/dirty-dozen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>many more polluting chemicals<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Unfortunately, pesticides don\u2019t pick and choose what to kill or harm, and they\u2019re at the mercy of nature once they\u2019ve been sprayed. Wherever they end up, they cause further harm, irrespective of their original purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This is why DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), one of the most harmful insecticides, was banned in the UK in 1986. It was found to have adverse effects on environments and potentially on human health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do pesticides &amp; fertilisers cause water pollution?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/agricultural-runoff.jpeg\" alt=\"Brown polluted water is running through a flooded agricultural field.\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/agricultural-runoff.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/agricultural-runoff-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">There are multiple ways in which pesticides \u2013 and any other farming chemicals, for that matter (such as fertilisers) \u2013 can make their way into water sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">For one, spraying pesticides near water is a surefire way to cause pollution. But there are many more indirect causes, too, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Agricultural runoff due to rain, irrigation, or melted snow\/ice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Overflow of irrigation return flows (where water from irrigation is returned to be used again)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The manufacturing of pesticides themselves<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Spraying down crop collection boxes when empty<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Equipment malfunction or leaking storage boxes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The quality of soil makes a difference, too. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/businesswales.gov.wales\/farmingconnect\/news-and-events\/technical-articles\/better-soil-management-avoiding-soil-compaction#:~:text=As%20a%20result%2C%20soil%20compaction%20can%20contribute%20to%20an%20increased,the%20effects%20of%20diffuse%20pollution.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>soil is compacted<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> by heavy machinery, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/how-flooding-affects-water-quality\/\"><strong>risk of floods<\/strong><\/a> and pollutant-filled runoff increases \u2013 as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-causes-droughts-and-flooding\/\">water cannot be soaked into the soil<\/a> <\/strong>easily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">So, pesticides get into water via a range of sources. They enter ponds, lakes, rivers, and ultimately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/marine-water-quality-importance\/\"><strong>the ocean<\/strong><\/a>. Traces of pesticides can even make their way into drinking water sources if not properly managed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of pesticides in water<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Depending on the chemicals in each pesticides, the effects on a given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/the-significance-of-clean-water\/\"><strong>body of water<\/strong><\/a> will vary \u2013 but there are general impacts found among many pesticides, which we will highlight here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Like many inorganic chemicals, they can and do have toxic effects on wildlife that live in and\/or depend on the water body. As we mentioned earlier, pesticides can continue to cause harm to whatever creatures find themselves around it. If the concentration is strong enough, they can be fatal to fish, plants, and aquatic insects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Because these fish, plants, and insects are dependent on each other, harm to the one is essentially harm to the other. In turn, mammals and birds that consume the fish suffer. The water is murky and green.\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/polluted-pond.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/polluted-pond-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/polluted-pond-768x513.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Aside from aquatic life fatalities, pesticide chemicals can also cause developmental issues in these creatures \u2013 such as spasms, respiratory difficulties, and unpredictable behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In essence, the contamination of lakes, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/pollution-in-uk-rivers\/\">rivers<\/a><\/strong>, and ponds with pesticide chemicals can harm or be fatal to the local ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">And, as part of that same local ecosystem, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/how-water-quality-affects-human-health\/\">humans can find that their drinking water<\/a><\/strong> sources become contaminated, too. Fortunately, though, the UK\u2019s water supply is under strict regulation by water quality directives that set maximum permitted levels of these chemicals in water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you prevent pesticide pollution?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Onto the positives \u2013 there are, luckily, countless ways to reduce the use and harm of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-are-the-biggest-sources-of-water-pollution\/\">pollution-causing<\/a><\/strong> pesticides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">At home, avoiding pesticide use altogether is a good idea. For the purposes of a home garden, the dangers of pesticides far outweigh the benefits. Introducing beneficial insects and complimentary plants is an excellent alternative (with a bit of good research in advance)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">On an agricultural level, many farms are introducing practices like crop rotation and sowing resistant crop varieties to reduce pesticide reliance. Some other best practices when using pesticides include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Establishing \u2018buffer strips\u2019 by not spraying within 6 metres of water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Avoiding spraying in conditions that cause drift<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Avoiding spraying if the ground is frozen or rain is expected soon after<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Spraying in such a way that means you avoid driving back over sprayed areas and picking up chemicals on tyres<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Cleaning equipment down before leaving the field<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Ploughing, crop rotation, cleaning tillage equipment, effective management of manure and infected plants \u2014 these can all help disrupt the environments that pests can thrive in, reducing the need for chemicals in the first place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sustainable agriculture practices<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/two-farmers-in-soy-field.jpeg\" alt=\"Two farmers stand in a soy field at sunset talking about how to best manage their crops.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/two-farmers-in-soy-field.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/two-farmers-in-soy-field-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/two-farmers-in-soy-field-768x511.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s also important to mention that many more sustainable farming alternatives are being proposed and used around the world that can eliminate the need for pesticides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The practice of mono-cropping refers to growing just one crop on the same land for a sustained period of time. While this is more profitable in the short term because you only need to use one process and set of chemicals on everything, it can be detrimental to the landscape in the longer term and cause growth issues down the line. As a result, farmers need to resort to more fertilisers and more pesticides \u2014 a vicious cycle forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Crop rotation, therefore, can help retain healthy levels of nutrients in the soil and reduce the use of these chemicals. Further still, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2022\/09\/220914102257.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>multi-crop systems<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> have been found to be hugely effective.
