Too much of one thing, and an entire ecosystem can be thrown off its axis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s the same with ammonia. If levels get too high in a body of water, aquatic life suffers. Let\u2019s take a look at what it is, where it comes from, and its impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is ammonia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/sensors\/ammonium-ammonia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>Ammonia<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> is a compound made up of nitrogen and hydrogen, with the formula NH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s a colourless, pungent-smelling gas that dissolves in water to form ammonium hydroxide solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In biological processes, it\u2019s often excreted as nitrogenous waste \u2013 by ammonotelic fish, for example, which excrete 50% of their nitrogenous waste as ammonia. The human body also produces ammonia when digesting protein and, similarly, treats it as a waste product and processes it via the liver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Ammonia also occurs naturally at low levels where organic waste (like manure and plant waste) breaks down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s different from ammonium (NH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">) in that it contains one nitrogen and three hydrogen, while ammonium contains one nitrogen and four hydrogen. Ammonium is also ionised and has no smell, but ammonia is known for its sharp odour.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where does ammonia in water come from?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As a byproduct of natural processes, ammonia is generally non-problematic. The issue occurs when it\u2019s found in high concentrations \u2013 and the culprits usually relate to commercial uses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The compound is used in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Cleaning products<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Plastics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Paper<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Rubber<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Animal feed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Fertiliser<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">And more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/impacts-of-pesticides-on-water-quality\/\">Agricultural<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and industrial runoff (and even purposeful discharges), then, can cause ammonia levels to build up in water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Highly-concentrated levels of ammonia in water can also be found where there are elevated levels of animal waste nearby \u2014 for example, where intensive animal farming occurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7398\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/drainage-pollution-into-water.jpeg\" alt=\"An overflow pipe over a body of water releases pollutants into the river.\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/drainage-pollution-into-water.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/drainage-pollution-into-water-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How ammonia affects aquatic life<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Toxic levels of ammonia vary depending on the water source, pH and temperature, and how you take your measurement.
