We love our <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/water-quality-management-uk\/\">UK waterways<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2014 from the babbling streams that run through woodlands to the precious rivers at the heart of our towns. Seeing these green havens affected by potential polluting events is distressing to say the least.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Fortunately, there are avenues for reporting water pollution which we\u2019ll get into later in this blog. First, let\u2019s look at the signs so you know what to look out for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to spot water pollution<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Water pollution takes many forms. Luckily, many of them are quite obvious \u2014 some, though, take a keener eye!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As for the more obvious signs, if you notice toilet paper, wipes, tissues, sanitary products, or even faecal matter, it\u2019ll be clear that a sewage incident has occurred. However, it\u2019s not always that straightforward; in the sea, for example, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/7-ways-to-stop-sea-pollution\/#:~:text=2.%20Improve%20wastewater%20systems\">sewage overflows<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> can cause swimmers to become ill without anything having looked out of the ordinary. Water companies are required to report these leakages, though (and for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">most part<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, they do\u2026) \u2014 you can check your local bathing water on the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.org.uk\/water-quality\/sewage-pollution-alerts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surfers Against Sewage app<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Another clear sign of pollution is the presence of dead or dying fish. Knowing the possibilities might help you determine that what you\u2019ve seen is, indeed, a pollution event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Some of the most <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/what-are-the-biggest-sources-of-water-pollution\/\">common causes<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> of water pollution and questions to ask yourself are, then:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Agricultural runoff (e.g. fertilisers, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/impacts-of-pesticides-on-water-quality\/\">pesticides<\/a><\/span>, manure)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Signs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> excessive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/blue-green-algae-causes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>algae<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, dead fish, foul smells<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Is there a farm nearby?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Industrial waste (e.g. metals, chemicals, oils, fuel)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Signs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">oily film, foaming, changes in water colour, chemical smells<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Where\u2019s the nearest factory or plant?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Is there a <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/applications\/construction\">construction<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> site nearby?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Effluent release (e.g. toilet roll, sanitary products, urine, faecal matter)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Signs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">sewage!<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Where\u2019s the nearest wastewater treatment plant? Is there a storm overflow near?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/blog\/how-does-urban-runoff-affect-water-quality\/\">Urban runoff<\/a><\/span> (fuel spillages, street debris, rubbish)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Signs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">oily film, changes in water colour, debris in the water<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Are there busy roads nearby? Perhaps there are roadworks happening?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Any of the above, caused by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaread.com\/applications\/flood-monitoring\">flood<\/a><\/span> water carrying chemicals or materials into waterways<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Has there been significant rainfall recently?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do when you spot water pollution<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">If you do spot polluted waters, ensure that you avoid contact with them and, if you can, let anyone around you know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The best next step is to call the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/report-an-environmental-incident\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environment Agency hotline (0800 80 70 60)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> to report it. Make sure that you have to hand:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The name of the waterway<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The location you believe to be polluted (use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/what3words.com\/staples.duet.logged\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>What Three Words<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The potential source of the pollution, if it is obvious<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Any details about what you can see (and\/or smell)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Your contact number, in case they need to call you back.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Unfortunately, because the Environment Agency seems to receive less funding year on year, they are often unable to respond to every incident \u2014 particularly ones that aren\u2019t serious. If you believe the pollution to be sewage-related, it is worth doing a Google search for \u2018report water pollution [your town]\u2019; there may well be a local service that can manage it. For example, many regional water companies take direct pollution reports in case their network is at fault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">If the polluted waterway belongs to the Canal River Trust (see if they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canalrivertrust.org.uk\/local-to-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>manage any near you<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">), you can get in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canalrivertrust.org.uk\/specialist-teams\/caring-for-our-environment\/what-to-do-if-you-spot-any-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>direct contact with them<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. They deal with all minor incidents in their canals and rivers. In the case that it hasn\u2019t, there is a high chance that the general public is unaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s well worth downloading the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.org.uk\/water-quality\/sewage-pollution-alerts\/safer-seas-rivers-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surfers Against Sewage app<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and reporting an incident. You can do this with the following steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Take a picture of the pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Go to the \u2018Locations\u2019 tab<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Find the beach on the map and click on the drop icon (which may have a \u2018tick\u2019 on it)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Scroll down to \u2018Evidence of Pollution?\u2019 and click \u2018Report Now\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Fill in the date and answer the questions about what the image shows<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Upload the image<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Submit your report.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Alternatively, you can send an email with the details to <\/span><a href=\"mailto:saferseasservice@sas.org.uk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">saferseasservice@sas.org.uk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Surfers Against Sewage also recommend emailing your local MP \u2014 you can do this via the app if there is a live pollution incident, by clicking on the location and scrolling down to \u2018Contact your local MP\u2019. It\u2019ll give you a templated email that you can simply fire off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water pollution monitoring<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Do you need to monitor a body of water for pollution?
