Chloride is a negatively charged ion that is formed when chlorine gains an additional electron. It is generally found in the form of salts, most commonly sodium and potassium salts, which are very soluble in water. Nearly all natural waters contain chloride and the concentrations vary greatly depending on the mineral content of the surrounding rock or soil. Aside from natural sources, chloride enters water from various human sources including: agricultural runoff, road salting, wastewater from industry, and produced water from gas and oil wells.
Our meter is an ion specific electrode (ISE) that attaches onto our Aquaprobes, and designed specifically for carrying out a chloride test in water. The chloride ISE is an optional electrode that is suitable for use with the AP-2000, AP-5000 or AP-7000 Aquaprobe, which are perfect for chlorides in water analysis.
The AP-2000 is a fully portable, handheld multiparameter chloride probe that measures 10 standard parameters, and has sockets for 1 optional ISE and 1 optional optical electrode. The AP-5000 is an Aquaprobe that allows you to record even more data than the AP-2000 but still retains its portability in that it’s only 55mm in diameter.
The AP-5000 allows you to add 4 additional electrodes. The AP-7000 is our newest Aquaprobe and has been designed, using the latest technology, to be deployed for long-term unmanned water testing: this probe cleans itself to prolong its deployment even further.
The chloride sensor works by measuring the potential charge across a membrane. The potentials of the two reference electrodes are constant, so it is the change in potential that is measured. The potential depends on the amount of chloride in the water sample.
Chloride is an essential mineral for organisms both on land and in water. It is involved in a range of biological processes such as maintaining proper osmotic pressure, water balance and acid-base balance in tissues. However, high or fluctuating concentrations of chloride in water bodies can have a negative effect on fish and aquatic ecosystems as a whole. Higher than natural concentrations of chloride can cause impaired survival, growth and reproduction, which is why a chloride test in water and analysis is vital.
The impact of chloride on the environment is dependant on various environmental conditions including dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, temperature, exposure time, and the presence of other contaminants. When measuring chloride in water it is important to consider the background levels that would naturally occur in the water. Using chloride sensors long term can help establish this background level, so that any major fluctuation can be assumed to be caused by the entry of a pollutant into the water body.
The benefit of a chloride test in water with our Aquaprobes is that the process is quick and accurate. When using chloride meters the reading is displayed clearly on the AquaMeter, stored in an AquaLogger or sent back to your desk via a telemetry system.

Measuring chloride in water is often part of an industrial process where a certain level of water purity is required. Chloride meters are also used to monitor the concentration in wastewater that is pumped back out into rivers and streams. Production of concrete can also require chloride testing because high levels of chloride can corrode the metal reinforcements that are present within a concrete structure.
